Believe it or not, gossip has a positive function in the society we live in.
For one, it can help clarify and enforce the rules that keep people working well together.
It also can help tell you about unspoken rules in your school, office, organization, or whatever group you're involved with.
Another universal truth: gossip occupies anywhere from 1/5th to 2/3rds of our daily coversations.
And, is it true that women engage more in gossip than men?
No, men appear to be as equally interested for gossip as women do.

I agree totally that gossip does serve a positive purpose, fulfilling certain psychological needs. However, one must be very cautious in benchmarking any performance against gossips as this can prove to be unreliable, if not damaging. It serves its purpose as an informal means of benchmark or channel of communication. Grapevine, that is.
