060606

For the superstitious, today is a dreadful day. A date with the devil is supposed to happen today. Seldom do the numbers in the month, day, and year find themselves all the same. I'm glad to be living in these interesting times. Worried pregnant mothers due to give birth today are all hesitant to give birth, and would rather postpone their labor pains either tomorrow or some other day.

Do I believe Satan (or his spawn) will pirouette into town today? Or will he simply lurk around in guileful silence like he usually does?

I don't know. For me numbers are just symbols. Those who fear the sequence of 666 are known to suffer from a condition called hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (whew!), and you call them collectively as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobes (another whew!).

Being evil is a state of mind. It has been with us since the dawn of time. It has taken many forms over the years, and what was previously good may be bad today. Worrying about it won't do you any good. Besides, cunning that he is, I don't think the Devil will show up on the day he is so much expected.
No evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia- quite a mouthful. :)

The number of the beast, as they say. For the young, this is todays buzz word. Interpretations vary, it depends if you are talking to a hexa...phobic or the opposite. Earlier, I went to one of the schools and I was asked this: "What's in a number anyway?" Before I could answer, some believers were putting across their ideas. I thought to myself, quite a following here.

Personally, I don't believe in it. In one of the countries that I've worked, they assigned numbers on the room/cubicle and mine was 4. Number 4 to the Chinese means death. I learned that there were no takers for that room/cubicle. I told them, if it's my time to vanish in this earth, so be it. Here in my location, you can choose your mobile phone number at a higher price. Chinese friends always reserve the number with the most 8s. It's luck for them.

So, what's in triple 6 anyway besides being feared, bad omen, Anti-Christ..etc.

Just like horoscopes, I don't believe numbers can influence you how to live your life. It can only when you allow it to affect you. I still believe we are the captains of our ships. :)

That's true doc. But I have different affinity with horoscopes. I usually read mine when the Lunar calendar is on. Usually on Chinese New Year. You may laugh at me, it's alright, but most of what is written happens. Take for example, three years ago, I was warned about my health and I had that illness. Only when it happened that I remember what I've read. I don't know what to call that. Sometimes it's creepy.

can't even read that word, much less articulate it!

you're right doc. satan, and evil, is everywhere, everytime. why should this day be any different?

sheesh! hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia is quite a loooonng word. well, it's nice to use is as a tongue-twister though. :P

you're right. why would the devil show himself when expected. he's the master of deceit, right? expect when unexcpected.

I don't know if you noticed but my plate number is 666. Siguro kaya iniiwasan ako ng ibang sasakyan no?>haha

I know your plate # is 666, Tito Rolly. Have you forgotten that I followed you from Ortigas to Marikina? I don't believe in fearing a day just because of a set of repetitive numbers. We choose our own destinies. Besides, the Devil is not dumb.

Talk about coincidences. I had forgotten about the 06.06.06 date but someone just would not leave me alone. On the morning of the day, I switched on the internet, logged into GMail and found that I had 666 unopened emails! Then I left for work and found myself tailing a car with a 666 registration number. Fortunately I am not superstitious.

Doc, you no longer require one's blogger identity to post comments?

That's freaky, Bayi.

I just read our local newspaper here and it says that yesterday, was an auspicious day for Chinese. In Singapore, there was a rush of marriages. According to Channel News Asia, triple 6 is a lucky number. In Malaysia, there was a mass wedding registration ceremony for 234 couples, ranging from 19-56 y.o. :)

ROANNE: Because you are a friend, I'll permit that plug of yours this one time only. Next time, try to be more tactful, ok?

BAYI: There must be somebody really trying to remind you about 666, my friend. I tried testing if I can revert back to allowing anonymous comments. Alas, I knew now that was an awful mistake. Regulation is back again.

IPANEMA: Those lucky numbers are too subjective. What must be unlucky for some is lucky for the others.

Perhaps, Dr. Emer. I have no luck in numbers. :(

I remember something related to Astrology. If you remember Chaucer's Wife of Bath in Canterbury Tales has had 5 husbands and many lovers, but blames the constellations as the cause of her amorous nature. lol.

Dr. Emer said...

Funny...but I know many people who are like that, Ipanema. :)

ipanema said...

lol doc...hmmm :)

She was born when Venus was in the ascendant with the planet Mars nearby. Venus made her loving, while Mars made her bold and aggressive. I hope the people you know won't have this explanation as well. That would be the day. :)

You know what scientists say about believing in astrology? It is illogical and dangerous. Just like what you've mentioned that we must realise our futures lie in ourselves, not in the stars.

Dr. Emer said...

But some people believe otherwise. Science believes only when there is reproducible proof that can be validated. Most of the time, that has worked well for us, in disease management and in technology development. Thousands of years ago, it was the other way around --- astrologers ruled and "achemists" were convicted.

That's true. Perhaps people long for comfort of having guidance. Something to look forward to. For me I think it's to relieve boredom. :)

That's true Bayi. In Hokkien dialect, the number six is pronounced like the word 'luck'. The Chinese say that the number "666" represent a smooth way ahead as well as luck.
