Typhoid in Calamba

Typhoid fever is transmitted by the fecal-oral route, meaning it is spead by the ingestion of food and water contaminated with the feces of an infected person.

Frequent and thorough hand-washing, making sure that food and water are always clean prior to consumption, and excellent sanitation are keys to prevention.

If 1,477 (or more) individuals have been affected, I say that this is less a personal hygiene (handwashing) problem than it is an indication that a major food supply (most likely, water) is contaminated.

The Department of Health has said that contaminated water is the culprit.

We were talking about this last weekend while in Baguio. Napaisip kami, what with the summer holidays coming in, vacationers might avoid Calamba's pools and troop to Baguio. Di tuloy namin maisip kung sino mas kawawa: Calamba or overcrowded Baguio.
