Not The Philippines

This is an image of what President Bush saw on board Air Force One on his way back to Washington, DC. The image shows the havoc caused by Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans where thousands are feared to have been killed.

We are so used to calamities and disasters that images like this do not astound us anymore. We also have lost thousands of lives because of super typhoons and flashfloods. Calamities like these bring out the best and the worst in people.

I offer my condolences to those who have lost family relatives and my prayers to those who are left behind.

I think what the Americans have experienced from Katrina is closest to the tsunami disaster we experienced in South and Southeast Asia lately. If this is the case, my heart goes out to the victims. It is the kind of catastrophe that one hopes only to read about and never have to experience. I believe all of us are equally saddened and we can only pray for the victims.

Let's also hope that the US government is quick in mobilising aid to the victims. May law and order prevail too.

Real help came after 5 days, Bayi. Being black and poor can be disadvantageous. That's what people in CNN and BBC have been saying.
