Black Nazarene Casualties

The most difficult deaths to prevent are those that were not avoided in the first place.

They knew there was going to be an ocean of people there. An ocean of people with the mentality of a mob. If I had a heart condition, hypertension, or low blood pressure, why would I go there? Still, they went. Blind faith? Desperation? We can give endless reasons, and we can always lay blame on somebody else. But the ultimate person responsible for one's life is himself. This happens every year. The cycle of not learning anything is amazing. Even God will not be happy about this.

Happy New Year! Long time no see. I am glad you are still blogging.

I was there... I call it stupidity... I saw old people, I saw parents with little children. I even saw parents with little babies... I almost saw a mother and her little baby tramped to death. This is not faith anymore but total lack of common sense.

I took some risk taking pictures but at least it were calculated risks and I knew what I was doing.

MAybe He won't, maybe He is. It's all a matter of perspective. There are people who might seen the devotees' passion for their faith as martyrdom, the ultimate sacrifice. Although I can hint a little selfishness there. What about those who will be left behind should one die to satisfy one's passion? Maybe I am too skeptical...

i would definitely faint with a crowd like that.

SIDNEY - Happy New Year! Wow! You went there? I'm glad you survived!

TITO ROLLY - The "ultimate sacrifice" is to die with meaning. But I agree, it is all a matter of perspective. What may be stupid for me might be "martyrdom" for others, as you said.

MARI - Definitely! There are many other ways of showing faith and devotion.

i'm mega claustrophobic. i wouldn't survive. i was a youth leader during world youth day 95 in manila and i couldn't stand the crowds. i took my "group" to a nearby hotel and we prayed along with the other pilgrims by watching tv. :) the next day, on our way home, papa john paul II passed right in front of me. electrifying.

nakakaawa ang mga tao dahil out of desperation, gagawin nila ang lahat para lang makalapit sa isang statwa. with babies in tow! or baka napako na sila sa tradisyon, wala nang logic. oh well. kalungkot naman yan, emer. :(

on svelte's comment -- precisely my point. i can't understand, for the life of me, as to why people would risk life just to touch the statue.
